1) Is this a gym?
No. We’re not like ZX Fitness, World’s Gym, Bally’s, etc. You can’t come in here, put on your iPod, and do your own thing. We are a coaching facility for fitness-minded people and for athletes. You don’t pay us to use the equipment, you pay us to get results. To do that, we all work out together and we help you through every step of the way.
2) Isn’t it expensive to join CrossFit?
CrossFit Farmingdale is a coaching/training facility. You will get a certified CrossFit trainer coaching every time you step into our doors. At a local gym like the local YMCA or Globo big box gym you may only pay $50 a month. You have to understand that that is an access fee. That small fee just gives you access to their gym. Inquire about personal training there and you’ll see the value of our Coaching Membership. In this area, 12-15 personal training seasons per month can cost you over $700 per month at your local gym plus the cost of membership. 3) Can you get hurt doing CrossFit?
Just like most activities, if you don’t do it correctly you can hurt yourself. That’s why we provide professional coaching and assistance for our members. We also require all members new to CrossFit to participate in our 4 class On-Ramp Course. This class will teach form and function of the typical exercises in CrossFit and free weight training as well as acclimate the member into the intensity of CrossFit workouts by starting them out in shorter, scaled down workouts. This is to give the new member a knowledge base of correct form on exercises before entering regular group classes as well as ease them into a new type of training allowing their bodies to adapt. We like to work with our crossfitters in 3 stages. First: Mechanics (learning how to do the movement with correct technique), Second: Consistency (the ability to do the movements over and over again with safe and relatively efficient technique), Third: Intensity (the speed at which you do the movements). One does not come before the other. Every single one of our instructors is certified to do just that.
4) How long is a CrossFit workout?
CrossFit workouts lengths will vary from workout to workout and will depend on your skill level. Most CrossFit “Workouts of the Day” can be completed in under 30 minutes. More and more research shows that shorter duration/higher intensity workouts yield greater benefits and results. If you run 5 miles your intensity level will be lower than if you run multiple 400 meter sprints. If you have a shorter workout, you can work harder by nature which can lend to a better response, especially combined with the movements we do. No matter who you are or what workouts you do, without hard work you will not receive results, which is why we encourage you to work to the limits of your physical and psychological tolerances.
5) Why group classes? Why can’t I workout when I want?
Group workouts get better results. Our group class format encourages a healthy, competitive spirit to motivate you to perform at your personal best. You’ll push yourself harder and have more fun in a group. Guaranteed!
6) Do I need to get into shape before I start CrossFit?
This is common misconception. The answer is no. CrossFit is designed to get those out of shape into shape and those in shape to get into better shape. The most elite athlete can come into the gym and find a workout challenging. You can never be “fit” enough. That’s why we are here and offer scaling options for each individual so that you can thrive during each workout on a personal level even if you are just a beginner.
7) Can I CrossFit if I have previous injuries?
Numerous members have come through out doors with previous injuries and are often concerned with re-injury. There couldn’t be a more perfect place for them to end up. Our CrossFit facility is attached to Premier Health and Rehab Solutions which offers a free consultation and injury prevention exam to every new CrossFit member. They can provide individualized treatment and therapy to make sure that the injured area is stabilized and ready for exercise. In fact Dr. Strump recommends that all of his stabilized patients participate in an exercise program. Working out with Crossfit will strengthen you entire body and actually make you less susceptible to future injuries. All CrossFit movements and workouts are completely scalable and can be modified allowing anyone to take part.
8) I’ve heard that CrossFit is really hard, is that true?
CrossFit is as hard as you make it. We encourage people to push to the limits of their own tolerances but only you can make the most out of your own workouts with the amount of work you put into them.
9) Will I get too big and bulky?
Different crossFitters will have different goals. Our coaches will always keep that in mind as they train and coach you. In order for people to get bigger, especially women there are two things that you would have to make a concerted effort to do. One: Pick up very heavy weight on a frequent basis. Two: eat an extremely high caloric diet of the right foods. These are two things that CrossFit Does Not focus on if your goals are to gain lean muscle and lose fat. We work with you on a program to create a slimmer crossFitter. The reason why CrossFit frequently focuses on lifting weights is because muscle is much more efficient at burning calories than fat. Doing this properly is what is missing from many peoples workouts. If your goals are to increase weight and lean muscle mass, CrossFit can help you to focus on those goals also.
10) What are some of the abbreviations that you use? What is wod’s?
WOD = Workout of the Day
1RM= 1 Rep Max
5×5= 5 repetitions x 5 sets
AMRAP = As Many Rounds As Possible
11) I see there are CrossFit’s all over Long Island now. Are all CrossFit’s the same? How do I select the right one?
We recognize that CrossFit facilities are very different then your traditional gym settings, and often CrossFit to CrossFit can vary tremendously. Some of those factors can include the location and size of the facility, the amount of classes and types of classes offered, the amount and quality of the gym equipment, and the experience and accessibility to the coaching staff.
